OXFORD, Ohio - Behind some timely offense and a strong start on the mound from sophomore Spencer Mraz, the RedHawk baseball team cruised to a 5-1 win in their series opener against Rider Friday evening in the team's home opener.
The victory improved Miami's record to 6-3 on the year and extended its win streak to four. Mraz (W, 1-0) went six innings strong on the hill for the 'Hawks, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out six.
Miami earned an early lead courtesy of single tallies in both the first and second innings. With no out and runners on the corners in the first, Ross Haffey grounded into a double play but Kyle Winkler scored from third. In the second, Will Vogelgesang got things started with a leadoff single and stole second. A groundout moved him to third before a Parker Massman RBI single brought him home for a 2-0 RedHawk lead.
A Broncs wild pitch in the sixth allowed Vogelgesang to score again before a two-run Haffey home run in the seventh iced it. Rider's lone run of the night came in the top of the eighth on an RBI single.
The RedHawks and Broncs are back on the diamond Saturday for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
