Miami Drops Saturday Doubleheader

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team lost both games of its doubleheader during the Miami Invitational on Saturday. The RedHawks fell to Michigan 7-0 and were edged by Fort Wayne 6-5. Miami now holds a 10-11 record on the season.
Michigan 7, Miami 0
Courtney Vierstra started the game in the circle, keeping Michigan scoreless through two innings, including a three-strikeout second inning that retired the side. Michigan broke through in the third inning with a string of five hits that scored four runs.
Taylor Rathe replaced Vierstra in the circle in the third inning with one out on the board and saw two batters to end the inning. Rathe gave up only one run in the top of the fourth on a solo shot to left center.
Shannon Hohman came into the game to pitch for the RedHawks to start the fifth inning and finished the game, recording four strikeouts. Two unearned runs were scored by Michigan in the sixth.
The RedHawks got someone on base in four innings. Miami loaded the bases in the first with walks by Megan Wurts and Ashton Slone as well as a single from Johniann Wahl. The RedHawks were unable to bring them around.
Morgan Lott walked and Wurts was hit by a pitch to get on base during the second inning.
In the fourth, Kaitlyn Gliha got on base with a walk.
Gliha and Rylee Whispel both singled in the bottom of the sixth but were stranded on base.
Fort Wayne 6, Miami 5
Miami scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first. Haeley Tran singled and Slone walked to put runners on first and second. Wahl singled up the middle to bring Tran home, but Slone was tagged out at third on the throw. Wahl advanced to second on the throw. Kat Lee brought Wahl around with a single but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Jaime Scher got the start in the circle for the RedHawks and went two and a third innings. Fort Wayne cut Miami's lead to one in the bottom of the first with a walk and a double to drive a run into home.
The RedHawks increased their lead in the third inning with three runs. Jenny Vasquez walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and then a passed ball. Wurts doubled to bring Vasquez around. Slone walked and Wahl reached base on a fielder's choice that forced Wurts out at third. Lee hit a double that brought Slone and Wahl home.
Fort Wayne answered with two singles and a run in the bottom of three to force a Miami pitching change with Hohman replacing Scher. Fort Wayne hit a two-run shot before Hohman struck out two batters to end the inning.
Fort Wayne took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a single and a walk to put runners on base and a double to drive them home. After Fort Wayne took the lead, Vierstra came into the game to pitch and finished the game in the circle.
Lee (2-for-3, 3 RBI) led the RedHawks at the plate. Wurts, Tran, Wahl, Leckinger and Vasquez also recorded a hit each for Miami.
