OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" For their performances last week, redshirt senior first baseman Ross Haffey and freshman pitcher Courtney Vierstra are Miami Athletes of the Week for the week of March 5-11.
Haffey had a big weekend for Miami and was a key catalyst in the team earning their second-straight weekend sweep, this time over Northern Kentucky. The first baseman hit .400 for the weekend, to go with three runs scored, one double, two home runs and five runs batted in. He also slugged 1.100 and drew five walks.
This is the first time this season and in second time in his career that Haffey has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of March 27-April 2, 2017.
Vierstra had another impressive weekend in the circle for the RedHawks while at the Maryland Invitational. Against Jacksonville, Vierstra pitched a complete game shutout, helping Miami earn a 6-0 win. Vierstra combined with Shannon Hohman for the 2-0 shutout win against host-team Maryland, also recording a save. Vierstra appeared in all four games this weekend, pitching 14.1 innings total and recording 14 strikeouts while only giving up three walks.
This is the first time this season and in her career that Vierstra has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, March 19.
