OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami baseball team cruised to its eight-straight victory Saturday afternoon when it rolled past Northern Kentucky, 10-2, at McKie Field. The win raised the RedHawks' record to 10-3 on the season.
Nine players recorded at least one hit and four had multiple. Parker Massman, Ross Haffey, Landon Stephens and Spencer Dull each notched two runs batted in.
MU had the offense going from the outset, pushing across a pair of runs in the first frame thanks to a Haffey two-run blast, his third of the season. The Red & White would score in innings two through five as well.
In the second, Dallas Hall and Cal Elvers led of the inning with a double and a single, respectively, putting runners on the corners. A Dull groundout brought Hall home, which was followed by Elvers swiping third and coming in on an Adrian Texidor single through the left side. Will Vogelgesang capped the frame's scoring when he singled in Texidor, who had gotten into scoring position thanks to a Norse wild pitch. Through two, Miami was maintaining a 5-0 lead.
The RedHawks got a single run in the third when Mackay Williams reached on a one-out hit by pitch before three-straight singles by Hall, Elvers and Dull brought him all the way around to score.
Miami added two more tallies in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Vogelgesang got the inning started with an infield single. Following a strikeout, Vogelgesang stole both second and third while Haffey drew a walk to put RedHawks on the corners with one down. Stephens then delivered by ripping a two-run triple to left center. In the fifth, Vogelgesang got on via a two-out hit by pitch which set the table for Massman, who cranked a two-run shot to left. His first career bomb had Miami up 10-0 through five innings.
Northern Kentucky scored its only two runs in the top of the sixth, one on an RBI groundout and the other on an RBI triple. Both tallies were tagged to starter Zach Spears, but were unearned as the inning began with an error and the runs came with two outs. Spears was dominant otherwise, going six innings strong with nine strikeouts and no walks. Jay Wilson, Kyle Wade, Jon Meyerring and Grant Hartwig combined to toss a scoreless final three innings.
Miami closes its series with the Norse on the road in Highland Heights, Ky. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
