KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Miami University softball team split its Saturday doubleheader at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. The RedHawks dropped the first game to South Carolina by a 12-0 margin in five innings. Miami beat Morgan State in the second game, 9-1 in six innings.
South Carolina 12, Miami 0 (5 inn.)
South Carolina's monstrous 12-run first inning was too much for Miami to overcome, despite Shannon Hohman allowing no runs during her outing.
Jaime Scher started the game at pitcher, with Taylor Rathe replacing Scher partway through the first inning. Hohman replaced Rathe to start the second inning and finished the game on the mound. Hohman allowed only two hits during her three-inning appearance.
Megan Wurts and Kaitlyn Gliha each got on base with a walk. Johniann Wahl hit a single in the top of the fifth.
Miami 9, Morgan State 1 (6 inn.)
Courtney Vierstra was strong on the mound and the hitters were strong on the ball as Miami earned its first run-rule win against Morgan State.
Vierstra started the game with two innings of three up, three down. She tallied three strikeouts during these first two innings, finishing with six total strikeouts. The Miami batters totaled nine hits, including two home runs. The RedHawks got the leadoff hitter on base in five of the six innings.
Miami got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run shot from Wahl. Wahl drove in Mackenzie Moore and Haeley Tran, who made it on base with a walk and single, respectively.
Moore hit a double in the fourth to add to Miami's lead, driving in Gliha. Gliha had reached base on balls.
Kat Lee recorded her first home run of the season in the fifth inning. It was a two-run shot, driving in Wahl. Wahl hit a single.
Morgan State scored on a Miami error in the top of the sixth inning before the RedHawks put the game away.
Lily Wilmot picked up two RBIs on a single as she served as a pinch hitter for Wurts. Wilmot also scored the final run of the game, coming in from third to score on a wild pitch.
