
RedHawks Split First Day of Citrus Classic

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Miami University softball team split its first two games at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic on Friday. In the first game, the RedHawks lost 11-8 against Harvard. Miami beat the Czech National Team in extra innings, 2-1.
Harvard 11, Miami 8
Harvard started out swinging, hitting a home run in each of the first two innings to give them a 3-0 lead going into the third.
The RedHawks started bringing in runs of their own in the third. Megan Wurts and Johniann Wahl both singled, before Kat Lee sacrificed to advance them to second and third. Ashton Slone brought them home to cut Harvards lead to one.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of the third, Miami scored twice in the fourth. Morgan Lott got on base with a triple and Haeley Tran picked up the RBI. Wurts drove Tran home with her second hit of the game.
Harvard would not go away - registering four runs in the bottom of the fourth to give them a 9-4 lead.
The RedHawks responded with a four-run inning of their own, totaling five walks, a double, a fielder's choice and a hit-by-pitch in the process. Slone, Rylee Whispel, Morgan Lott, Mackenzie Moore and Wahl all walked. Kaitlyn Gliha doubled.
Miami trailed 9-8 going into the bottom of the sixth. Harvard scored twice - once on a homerun and once on a wild pitch. The RedHawks could not score in the seventh.
Miami 2, Czech National Team 1 (9 inn.)
The game remained scoreless through eight innings. The Czech National Team scored one run in the top of the ninth. Kat Lee was the hero for the RedHawks in this one, hitting a walk-off single that brought in two runs.
Jaime Scher and Courtney Vierstra took the mound for Miami. Scher started strong, registering a strikeout in three of her five innings pitched. In the second, Scher forced the Czech National Team to go three up and three down. Vierstra took over in the sixth inning and finished the game. In the seventh, Vierstra saw only three batters and struck out all of them.

The Citrus Classic continues through Sunday. On Saturday, Miami faces South Carolina at 12:30 p.m. and Morgan State at 5:30 p.m. All start times are tentative.
