RedHawks Open Season With Doubleheader Split at Arizona State

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Miami baseball team earned a season-opening win for the first time since 2007 on Saturday when it defeated Arizona State, 4-2, in game one of a doubleheader before falling in the night cap, 7-3.

The Red & White opened the day with a 4-2 win over the Sun Devils behind a strong defensive and pitching effort. Starting hurler Nick Ernst (W, 1-0) was stellar in his 2018 debut, going six innings strong and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six.

Miami got its first run of the year early when a Hayden Senger one-out double in the top of the second drove in Cal Elvers from second.

The `Hawks widened their advantage in the away half of the fifth on a Grant Hartwig two-out, two-RBI single through the left side. Ross Haffey and Landon Stephens scored on the play after reaching on an error and a walk, respectively.

The Sun Devils got on the board in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a MU throwing error. The Red & White had a 3-1 margin through five frames.
Arizona State inched closer with a sac fly in the seventh but a Dallas Hall RBI double in the top of the eighth gave Miami some insurance and enough to collect the two-run victory.

Junior Jack Corbell, making his first appearance as a RedHawk, picked up the save by tossing a scoreless final 1.1 innings.

The Sun Devils grabbed a brief lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the second. Miami answered right back in the next half inning on a Hall RBI single and a two-run Haffey homer, his first of the year.

However, the RedHawk offense would go mostly quiet the rest of the way, getting runners on but unable to get the timely hit. MU starter Zach Spears (L, 0-1) took the defeat after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
The same two teams are right back at it Sunday at Noon ET for another doubleheader with the series up for grabs.
