Miami won the meet by nearly 20 points in its breakout performance.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Miami collegiate synchronized skating team made a statement in a stunning performance at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic on Sunday.
MU dominated the nine-team field with a breakout effort in its Glam themed free skate, notching a 97.52 to win the meet by nearly 20 points with only Adrian (79.80) and Michigan (79.38) within even that much. In a first half of the season that saw both the collegiate and senior programs show enormous progress from last season, the RedHawks' performance today was 14 points better than any score it put up during the entire 2017-18 campaign.
"The team was extremely determined to be aggressive at this event and made a statement and they did it," head coach Carla DeGirolamo said. "The program from the very first note to the last was full of energy. It was fast and fun and that was really cool to see.
"The next few months, we will continue to work on cleaning up shapes and positions while making sure the technical stuff is still solid. We have some elements that we will work on getting full credit on. It's exciting to have a few solid weeks of just training ahead of us. J-term allows us to get a lot of quality training in and focus on the work on the ice. The team is excited to get to work in the second half."
This weekend concludes a strong first half by both the senior and collegiate programs as every competition has featured a first or second place finish for the Red & White. The senior team wrapped up a second-place finish in its field on Saturday and is likewise already ahead of its high-water mark from a year ago months ahead of nationals.
Both teams are idle for the rest of the 2018 calendar year. The collegiate team is back in action on Jan. 19 when it heads to Synchro Illinois while the senior squad begins its international schedule at the Leon Lurje Trophy in Gothenburg, Sweden from Jan. 26-27.
