The Miami University Athletics Department has announced the formal creation of its Human Performance and Wellness Division.
The effort combines Miami's strength and conditioning (now Human Performance) and sports medicine (now Wellness Services) into one unit in an effort to improve efficiencies, organizational structure and communication and to bring operations into modern times.
"Over the course of the past year we have all taken a hard look at the set-up of our traditional sports medicine and strength and conditioning programs," said Director of Athletics David Sayler. "We believe our new model is more reflective of the demands and needs of today's student-athlete for injury prevention, rehabilitation, performance, mental health, nutrition and strength training and conditioning. This approach is more holistic and ultimately will benefit not just student-athletes today but well beyond their years at Miami."
The unified division will be led by Dr. Stephen Dailey, recently appointed as the Associate Athletic Director for Human Performance and Wellness. Dailey, who previously oversaw sports medicine for the RedHawks, has been involved with Miami Athletics as a football student-athlete since the 1980s, and later came back to the University as a team physician after medical school. He will be in charge of all physicians, other doctors, physical therapy and rehab staff. He and Miami will continue to work with Medical Director and expert Ron Hess of Mercy Health, while all student-athletes will continue to receive exceptional sports and rehabilitation services from Mercy.
"I am excited to lead this unit of exceptional professionals into a new era," said Dr. Dailey. "Our new set-up and structure reflects the needs of today's student-athletes and affords us the opportunity to be proactive in our preparation and planning to help Miami Athletics Graduate Champions."
Jen Beardslee has been elevated to join the new unit's leadership group as the Assistant Athletic Director for Wellness Services. She will directly oversee the Sports Psychology team, budgeting, insurance and billing. She will also work with Paul Eversole, now the Associate Director of Wellness Services and the head football trainer, who will oversee the athletic training staff and their daily management and functions.
"I am honored that Mr. Sayler and Dr. Dailey have the confidence in me to expand my role within the Wellness Department at Miami," said Beardslee. "The integration of the sports medicine and strength and conditioning departments has been a goal for many years in order to enhance services to our student-athletes, especially in the areas of sports psychology and nutrition. We constantly strive to provide our hard working student-athletes every opportunity to succeed off and on their respective playing surfaces. I'm excited to work closely with James Carsey and the staff to elevate Miami's Human Performance & Wellness Division to one of the premier divisions of its kind."
James Carsey, in his second stint at Miami, is now the Assistant Athletic Director for Human Performance. He will oversee the entire Human Performance staff, budgeting related to it, equipment and, along with Beardslee, nutrition. Carsey is a disciple of Miami's first-ever strength and conditioning coach, a Miami Hall of Famer and football alumnus, Super Bowl Champion and current head strength and conditioning coach for the New Orleans Saints, Dan Dalrymple.
"I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Miami Athletic family and the vision Mr. Sayler and the administration is developing for the future of our student-athletes success," said Carsey. "This model is just another step to increase the quality of service we provide and a collaboration to focus on the total well-being of our athletes. Increased group communication on individual needs (corrective & proactive), state of the art monitoring of their movement patterns, improved restoration and recovery & nutrition processes will give our student-athletes the edge they need."
"We believe we have an excellent staff that truly puts student well-being first," Sayler said. "That all starts with Dr. Dailey and the care and concern he has for our student-athletes. Along with Jen, James and Paul, we have an exceptional leadership group to support our students and coaches."
In recent months, Human Performance and Wellness has added a sports psychologist with a staff psychologist for mental health and a nutritionist. Future plans include adding a physiologist in coming years.
