Great Second Half Gives Soccer 4-0 Win Over Northern Illinois

OXFORD, Ohio – After a scoreless first half, the Miami University soccer team exploded for a season-high four goals in the second half to earn their first Mid-American Conference victory, 4-0, over Northern Illinois. The RedHawks improve to 3-9-1 overall and 1-5 in the MAC. The Huskies fall to 1-13 overall and 0-6 in the MAC.

The first 25 minutes were played mostly in the midfield as neither team could establish control. In the 10th minute freshman goalkeeper Lauren Parker made a great diving save to keep NIU off the board. In the final 20 minutes the RedHawks began pressing the action. Freshman Desiree Grubbs had three shots, while sophomore Soph Spinell had a shot from the corner of the box that the Huskie goalkeeper made a nice save on. The half ended scoreless with Miami holding a 9-4 advantage in shots.

The RedHawks continued to apply pressure to begin the second half as they had a pair of early chances. Miami was rewarded in the 65th minute when freshman Kristina DeMarco gained control and took the ball down the right side. She sent a cross into the box which found junior Olivia Winnett, who buried it to put the Red and White in front 1-0.

In the 73rd minute, freshman Lyda Bogdanovitch was taken down on a breakaway inside the box. She was awarded a penalty kick, which she buried to make it 2-0.

Bogdanovitch got her second of the match in the 87th minute when she brought the ball into the box and hit the top left corner of the net on her shot. Only 49 seconds later freshman Tyler Klika took a shot from the middle about 30 yards out and was able to just sneak under the top of the net for her first career goal to finish the scoring and make it 4-0.

Miami outshot Northern Illinois, 21-10, for the match and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Bogdanovitch led the 'Hawks with five shots, while Winnett had four. Parker finished with two saves in net.

The RedHawks return to action Friday when they host Buffalo at 4 p.m.
