CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Miami University field hockey team went back and forth with No. 18 Virginia but ultimately were edged by a 2-1 margin on Sunday. The RedHawks drop to a 9-5 overall record this season while the Cavaliers improve to 5-7 overall.

Virginia took an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of play.

Allie Grace Joyner tied the game during the fifth minute with her fifth goal of the season. Joyner scored by tipping in a pass that came from the stick of Estel Roig.

Miami earned the first penalty corner of the game during the 10^th minute of play. The Virginia goalkeeper came up with two saves to keep the game tied.

After Virginia's first penalty corner of the game midway through the first half, the RedHawks would go on to earn the next four corner chances.

The Cavaliers earned a pair of penalty corners with two minutes to play but were held to just one shot on those chances.

The two teams were tied at one after 35 minutes of play. Miami led in shots (10-7), shots on goal (5-4) and penalty corners (5-3).

Each team earned a penalty corner and took a shot in the first portion of the second half as the teams battled midfield for possession.

The Cavaliers broke the tie with 10 minutes left in the game.

Leonor Berlie led both teams with four shots. Maddie Passarella recorded five saves. Miami led the game in shots (13-11) and penalty corners (7-4) while each team recorded seven shots on goal.
