Toledo will host this year’s meet on Saturday.
OXFORD, Ohio – With its eyes set on a conference title, the Miami University cross country team will set out for Toledo on Saturday for the 2018 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships.
The meet will be held at Ottawa Park Golf Course. The women's 6K will start first at 11 a.m. with the men's race to follow at noon.
The RedHawks head into championship Saturday following an off week. Miami's last competition was at Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Oct. 13. Running against many of the nation's top cross country squads, the RedHawks put on a solid performance, finishing 14th in the men's White heat and 17th in the women's Cardinal heat. Junior Christopher Torpy and redshirt senior Alesha Vovk led the way for their respective teams, with each setting a personal record.
Last season's MAC Championships were held in Oxford, with the RedHawk men taking second and the women placing third. A lot of experience from those teams returns for this year's championship meet. Four men's runners who finished in last season's top 15 in Chris and Sean Torpy, David Coffey, and Bradley Davis will look to build on last year's performance. On the women's side, Vovk, Carly Davis, and Sarah Starrett are a few names that found success last year and will look to lead the team on Saturday. Eastern Michigan is the defending champion on both the men's and women's sides.
This returning experience led Miami into the 2018 season with high expectations and a goal on competing for the MAC title. In the conference preseason poll, the Miami men were tabbed to finish first, with a near-unanimous eight first-place votes. The women were selected to finish third and also garnered a first-place vote.
The RedHawk men are currently ranked seventh in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes regional rankings, the highest of any MAC school. The women's team comes in at eighth in the Great Lakes region, behind only Eastern Michigan at seventh.
Live results for the meet will be available here on Saturday. For more updates, be sure to stay tuned to MiamiRedHawks.com and follow @MiamiOH_XCTF on Twitter and Instagram.
