OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team (11-6, 5-0 MAC) beat conference-foe Appalachian State (5-11, 1-4 MAC) by a 4-1 margin on Saturday to clinch at least a share of the MAC regular season title. With the victory, the RedHawks also clinched the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament.
Less than five minutes into the game, Paula Portugal took the ball into the circle and put a backhand shot past Rachel Gaines for her 17th goal of the season to give Miami an early lead.
The RedHawks earned three quick penalty corner chances to take the game to the middle of the first half but Gaines posted a pair of saves to keep the Mountaineers within one.
In the 26th minute, Noor Breedijk took a shot from the top of the circle that ricocheted off of the pad of Gaines and right to the stick of Taylor Curran, who made no mistake of putting the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The RedHawks had the 2-0 lead at the half. Miami also led in shots (11-0) and penalty corners (3-0).
In the 48th minute, Veerle Van Heertum cut the RedHawks' lead in half with her ninth goal of the season. This was the first goal Miami allowed in conference play this season.
The Red and White responded by charging up the field and earning three penalty corners back-to-back. Two of Miami's shots were blocked and Gaines recorded another save.
With 11 minutes to play, Lexi Silver sent a long cross pass into the circle right in front of Gaines. Morgan Sturm got it past Gaines for her first goal of the season.
Miami kept the offensive pressure on as the ball was put in the back of the net twice in the span of a few minutes. After video review, both goals were called off and the score remained 3-1 in favor of the 'Hawks.
In the 64th minute of play, the RedHawks earned another penalty corner. After a clean entry, Portugal tipped in the resulting shot from Mariona Heras to score her second of the afternoon and 18th of the season to cap scoring at 4-1.
The RedHawks led the game in shots (20-2), shots on goal (11-2) and penalty corners (11-1). Portugal led both teams with five shots. Leonor Berlie and Allie Grace Joyner each took four.
Miami hosts Michigan State on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.
