Hockey Drops Ice Breaker Opener to No. 4/5 Providence

PC scored twice 1:28 apart in the first period as Miami could not climb out of the hole.

ERIE, Pa. – Despite early opportunities for the Miami hockey team, it was unable to answer a pair of Providence goals less than 90 seconds apart in a 4-0 loss to the No. 4/5 Friars at the Ice Breaker on Friday afternoon.

The RedHawks (2-1) drop their first decision of the year and will play in Saturday's tournament consolation game.

Miami got a pair of power play opportunities in the first period, including one 3:12 into the contest. While MU blasted six shots, three were blocked by PC defenders and the others were off target as the contest remained scoreless. Midway through the first, the Friars (2-0) got goals from Greg Printz and Vincent Desharnais 1:28 apart to grab a 2-0 lead with 9:47 left in the frame. Both teams got nine shots on goal as the Friars skated into the dressing room up a pair at intermission.

The Friars put some more pressure on the RedHawk net in the second period, finishing with a 12-5 shot advantage, but Ryan Larkin weathered the storm to keep the contest within reach. Miami got its third power play of the day with 7:08 left in the period, but could not capitalize as the deficit remained at two goals after 40 minutes.

MU got four more power play chances in the third period, but PC killed off each one while using a man advantage of its own to go up 3-0 when Spenser Young struck with 6:51 remaining. Young capped the scoring to make it 4-0 with 1:44 left.

The Friars finished with a 33-22 advantage in shots on goal and blocked 17 RedHawk shots on the night. Larkin stopped 29 shots while Hayden Hawkey made 22 saves.

Miami takes on either Notre Dame or Mercyhurst in Saturday's tournament consolation. Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.
