OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" For their performances last week, freshman hockey forward Casey Gilling and junior basketball forward Kendall McCoy are Miami Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 1-7.
Gilling had his best weekend of the season to help the RedHawks earn a home split against defending national champion Denver. Friday night saw the freshman forward post a season-high three points with his first career multi-goal game as he opened the scoring 1:10 into the contest. He then helped MU hold DU off in the third with a power play goal and an assist on the game-winning goal of a 4-3 victory. He also had a hand in the scoring on Saturday, assisting on Miami's lone tally of the night.
This is the second time this season and in his career that Gilling has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
McCoy had a strong week in two games for the RedHawks. The forward averaged 15.5 points per game on 50 percent shooting (12-of-24) from the floor. She also chipped in 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. At Ball State on Wednesday, McCoy recorded 13 points to go with six rebounds in 24 minutes of action. On Saturday against Central Michigan, she tied her season-best with 18 points along with two steals and four rebounds. At 10.6 ppg overall, McCoy is the second-leading scorer on the team this season. Her 5.7 rpg ties for the team lead. McCoy has been one of Miami's most consistent players of late as she's scored in double figures in four straight games and seven of the last eight.
This is the second time this season and fourth time in her career that McCoy has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Nov. 27-Dec. 3.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, Jan. 15.
