OXFORD, Ohio - Despite having a season-high five players in double figures, the Miami University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a first quarter scoring spurt, falling 84-66, to Central Michigan University Saturday afternoon.
The loss broke a six-game home winning streak to begin the season for the RedHawks (9-5, 1-2 MAC) and was the first for any Miami basketball team this season at Millett Hall.
Junior forward Kendall McCoy led Miami scorers with 18 points off the bench, tying her season-best total. With 13 points, sophomore guard Lauren Dickerson extended her streak of consecutive double-figures scoring efforts to 25, continuing a streak from the 2016-17 campaign. Redshirt junior guard Baleigh Reid, sophomore forward Savannah Kluesner and senior guard Kayla Brown also broke double-digits with ten points each. Elsewhere on the stat sheet, Dickerson led with eight assists, while Reid grabbed seven rebounds.
The first quarter opened with a brisk pace as both teams traded baskets, giving Miami an early 11-10 lead at the midway point. Central Michigan responded with a 17-5 run to close the period, amassing the total with a flurry of layups. In the second, the Chippewas (11-3, 3-0 MAC) continued their momentum, building their advantage to 20 points with 4:38 remaining in the half. Led by eight points from Reid in the final minutes, the RedHawks narrowed the gap, closing the margin to 46-36 at the half.
After cutting the CMU lead to nine halfway through the third, Miami once again saw the Chippewas break away with five consecutive field goals to make it 67-52 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, the Chippewas maintained a healthy lead throughout, but Miami scored the last six points of the game to cut down the final margin.
The RedHawks return to the road for their next meeting as they travel to face Buffalo on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. Miami's next outing at Millett Hall will be against Eastern Michigan next Saturday at 2 p.m.
