OXFORD, Ohio -
The Miami soccer team created a few dangerous scoring opportunities in the second half, but was unable to capitalize on its opportunities in a 1-0 loss to defending Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Kent State on Friday.

KSU (7-3-1, 3-0 MAC) netted a goal in the 55th minute and held off MU's (0-10, 0-3 MAC) comeback bid down the stretch.

"We gave ourselves a chance to win the game," Interim Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth said. "We weren't as clinical getting down the sidelines. In the second half we responded and got a lot more shots and some corner kicks. We have to be about our next game. We have to dig deep right now. This is a hard thing we are going through, but I think we're going to have a great performance against Ohio on Sunday."

The teams were feeling each other out in the early going and it appeared a break might go Miami's way when a Kent State player went too far after being called for a foul and earned a red card, putting KSU down to fielding 10 players in the 11th minute of play. However, the Golden Flashes were able to get out of the first half still tied up at 0-0, holding a 5-2 lead in shot attempts.

After a long drought without a shot, Madison Knock put a tricky attempt on target in the 52nd minute. The senior defender stepped into a loose ball from 22-yards out and placed one towards the upper 90, but Ashleah McDonald made a leaping stop to knock the ball out of play. Three minutes later, the Golden Flashes got on the board when Kristen Brots sent a ball through down the right side, setting up Karlia Paracca in space where she fed Isabelle Mihail in the middle for a shot that slid just inside the left post to put them up 1-0.

The Red & White put a surge together in the 63rd minute, generating three shots off a pair of corner kicks from in close. However, attempts by Katie Alexander and Tara Walenczyk were blocked and a header by Lydia Brosnahan ended up sliding wide of the frame to keep it a one-shot contest. While the RedHawks did fire three more shots with two on target, most of them were to the outside as KSU held on for the victory.

Kent State ended up with a 12-10 shot advantage along with a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Patricia Koutoulas made five stops for the RedHawks while McDonald turned aside four shots for the Golden Flashes.

Miami concludes this weekend set by hosting a Battle of the Bricks showdown against Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the match, the RedHawks will hold their Senior Day ceremony while honoring the career of retired head coach Bobby Kramig.
