BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - While the Miami soccer team managed to rebound from an early goal, Bowling Green had a big day offensively and dealt MU a 4-1 setback on Sunday.
The Falcons (6-3, 1-1 Mid-American) scored three unanswered goals and the match was only tied for roughly five minutes as the RedHawks (0-9, 0-2 MAC) dropped the showdown with their in-state foes.
Another slow start saw Miami trailing early as Bowling Green withstood some early pressure and countered with a Skylar Fleak goal with just 2:34 gone by.
For the first time in a first half this season, the RedHawks managed to find the net. This tally came in the 18th minute on the strength of a corner kick set piece. The ball was eventually played to Katie Alexander, who buried her first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1. Olivia Winnett and Amy Malone both earned assists on the play.
That tie only lasted another 2:50, however, as Skylar Fleak poured in her second goal of the afternoon on a Falcon corner kick in the 20th minute before Marissa Swindell added a breathing room tally with 54 seconds left in the opening frame to put them up 3-1 at the break. An own goal bumped Bowling Green's lead to 4-1 just 22 seconds into the second half, putting Miami in more of a catch up mode than it already was. While the Red and White created some sporadic chances, they were unable to draw closer as the score held the rest of the way.
"We made some mistakes that you can't make in a MAC game," Interim Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth said. "Our passing has been pretty good this season, but it let us down today. We didn't hit our passes and then it just led to us defending again. I'm proud of a lot of the freshmen who stepped in to play a lot of minutes. It was good to see Emily Roberts and Soph Spinell back in from injury. Katie scored a great goal and we tied it at 1-1, but they turned around and scored on a corner of their own and we didn't get back from that."
The Falcons outshot the RedHawks 24-14 for the afternoon and also enjoyed a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Patricia Koutoulas stopped seven Bowling Green shots while Victoria Cope made three saves and eventually gave way to Kathleen Duwve for the final 22 minutes of play.
Miami returns home to resume MAC play on Friday when it hosts defending MAC Tournament champion Kent State. Opening kick at Miami Soccer Field is at 4 p.m.
