OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University cross country walked away from the RedHawk Rumble with a win in both the men's and women's races. The Red and White braved the heat and turned in a great performance in their first home meet since 2014.
Sophomore Sean Torpy, the defending Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week, topped his previous PR with a blazing 25:05.0. This comes one week after beating his freshman-year personal best by 35 seconds with a 25:08.3.
Right on his heels was his brother, Christopher Torpy. The sophomore's 23:37.5 was good for second place. Chris led the RedHawks at the Indiana Open, while Sean has been the leader of the pack the last two meets.
"It's a friendly rivalry," said Chris last week. "It's nice to have someone to constantly be pushing yourself with."
With the Torpy brothers taking first and second, the remaining three scoring RedHawks took fourth, fifth, and sixth. Senior Jake Brumfield led the group with a 25:59.4. Sophomore David Coffey finished fifth with a 26:05.3 and sophomore Ryan Sharkey crossed just after him with a 26:05.3.
The women's race brought more of the same Miami dominance. Senior Maria Scavuzzo picked up her first cross country win since last fall's All-Ohio Championships. She crossed the finish line Saturday with a 21:43.1.
Behind her was her running partner, Carly Davis, whose 22:00.9 was good for second place. Davis had yet to crack the top-10 in a race prior to the runner-up performance.
Also scoring for the women was Alesha Vovk, Elli Brady, and Allison Klonne. The trio took fourth, sixth, and seventh, respectively. Brady, who ran a 22:53.4, appears to be fully warmed up now that she has run three races with Miami since joining as a graduate transfer from Notre Dame. Saturday's sixth-place finish was the best of her collegiate career.
Miami's next stop will be at Cedarville for the All-Ohio Championships on September 29.
