OXFORD, Ohio - In her final home appearance, senior Carly Mortensen's two-hit relief performance helped Miami University's softball team top Akron, 5-1, in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon at the Miami Softball Stadium.
The RedHawks (29-22, 14-10 MAC) overcame a tough opening inning to rally past the Zips (26-28, 12-12 MAC), sealing a series victory in the conclusion of Mid-American Conference action.
Akron came out firing in the top of the first as left fielder Savannah Fruin brought home center fielder Ashley Sims with a RBI single to left-center. Miami freshman starter Jaime Scher then induced a pair of strikeouts that stranded two Zips and kept the margin at one. In the bottom half of the inning, an error by Fruin allowed sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman to score from second, knotting the contest.
In the top of the third, Mortensen relieved Scher and allowed a single on her first at-bat. Following the hit, she proceeded to retire the next 12 Zips she faced, picking right up after her dominant complete game outing on Saturday. Miami took advantage of another Akron error in the bottom frame as junior third baseman Kat Lee reached on a poor throw and came around to score on a double to left-center by junior left fielder Kaitlyn Gliha.
Schlattman added another run in the fourth with a double to left-center, scoring freshman right fielder Haeley Tran, who had reached on a double herself. The Miami shortstop added two more insurance runs in the sixth with a comebacker at the pitcher, which allowed senior center fielder Jenna Jones and junior designated player Megan Wurts to score, making it 5-1 Miami.
In the top of the seventh, Mortensen's hitless streak ended, but she got a pair of pop-ups to seal the Miami victory.
Mortensen earned the win to improve to 8-3, allowing only two hits and striking out four over five innings of work. Schlattman led the RedHawks' offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Gliha finished a strong weekend with a 1-for-2 performance, tallying a double and RBI.
The RedHawks will now await the official announcement of the seeds and schedule for this week's MAC Softball Championship, beginning Wednesday, May 10 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
