KENT, Ohio - The Miami University baseball team kept its MAC tournament hopes alive by salvaging the series finale at Kent State in a 2-1 decision on Sunday at Schoonover Stadium. Grant Hartwig's pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the eighth represented the game-winning hit, while two strong performances out of the bullpen sealed the victory.
The Golden Flashes captured the first run of the contest with an RBI double in the bottom half of the third.
Miami finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth courtesy of a Ross Haffey solo blast over the right field wall, which knotted the game at 1-all.
The only other tally of the day came in the RedHawk portion of the eighth. Steve Sada led off the frame with a single through the left side and was advanced to second on a Dallas Hall sacrifice bunt. Haffey followed with a double to left center, putting runners on second and third for Hartwig, who delivered on an RBI single to left that scored Sada.
Miami got solid outings from each of the three pitchers that appeared. Bailey Martin got the starting nod and went 4.1 innings with just one run allowed on two hits. He also struck out five Flashes. Nick Ernst and Ryan Marske (W, 2-0) each tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, combining to allow just two hits while fanning six.
The RedHawks close their regular season this coming weekend when they host Northern Illinois for a three-game series at McKie Field. The action gets underway on Thursday with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
