OXFORD, Ohio - After erasing an early four-run deficit, the Miami University baseball team could not ovecome another as they dropped a back-and-forth battle to Eastern Michigan, 10-6, on Sunday. The RedHawks took a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth but the Eagles answered in the next half with four runs and did not look back as they grabbed the victory in the series finale.
EMU (12-19, 4-2 MAC) was the first team to push across runs, belting back-to-back solo shots in the top of the third. The Eagles doubled their output in the fourth, striking on a two-out, two-run single up the middle. Miami (8-23, 2-7 MAC) got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth when Hayden Senger drew a bases-loaded walk, cutting the EMU lead to 4-1 after four innings of play.
The Red & White offense erupted in the fifth. Tyler Harris got the inning started with a single through the left side, which was followed by a Landon Stephens walk. After an out, Carlos Texidor singled down the line in right, loading the bases for Steve Sada, who tripled to knot the contest at 4-all. Brooks Urich got Miami the lead when he lifted a sacrifice fly to left that plated Sada.
EMU quickly retook the momentum with a four-spot of their own in the top of the sixth. A one-run single and a three-run double had the Eagles out in front, 8-5. The 'Hawks got one back in the home half of the inning when Texidor singled in Elvers, who had gotten on with a two-out double to right center.
The Eagles got themselves some cushion in the eighth courtesy of a pair of one-run singles.
RedHawk starting pitcher Grant Hartwig went 4.2 innings and was tagged with four runs on seven hits. He also struck out a career-high six batters. Andy Almquist (L, 0-2) was the first hurler out of the bullpen for MU. He tossed 2.1 innings and surrendered four runs on three hits while fanning three. Harris pitched the final two innings for the Red & White, allowing two runs on five hits.
Miami gets back at it with a home-and-home against Dayton. The latter half will be in Oxford at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The RedHawks stay home for the weekend and take a break from conference play when they host La Salle for a three-game set.
