OXFORD, Ohio - After building an early 4-0 lead, the Miami baseball team ultimately fell to Cincinnati, 8-6, on Wednesday night at McKie Field. The loss drops the 'Hawks to 7-20 on the year while the Bearcats move to 14-14.
The Red & White got an ideal start offensively as Cal Elvers (single), Adam Yacek (single) and Ross Haffey (walk) all reached to start off the bottom of the first. With one swing of the bat, they were all brought home as Tyler Harris crushed a grand slam over the wall in right field, handing Miami a 4-0 advantage through one.
Cincinnati broke through in the fourth inning with a one-run single and a sacrifice fly, narrowing its deficit to 4-2. The Bearcats would get all the scoring they needed soon after with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the lead at 8-4.
The RedHawks made things interesting in the ninth. Grant Hartwig ripped a leadoff pinch-hit double down the line in left to get Miami a baserunner. After two quick outs, Haffey went opposite field for a two-run shot that cut the UC lead to 8-6. Harris followed by drawing a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout ended any potential comeback.
Miami gets right back to it with a Wednesday test at Xavier. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
