ATHENS, Ohio - Miami evened its series at Ohio with a big 3-1 victory under the lights at Bob Wren Stadium Saturday evening. The RedHawks only needed a three-run third inning as the pitching picked up the slack to set-up a Sunday rubber match.
The Red & White got a quality start from Zach Spears (W, 3-6), who went six innings and allowed just one run on nine hits. He also walked just one and fanned seven Bobcats. Nick Ernst handled the final three innings for MU and allowed no runs and just two hits while striking out two to pick up his fourth save of the 2017 campaign.
After a tentative first couple of innings between the two sides, it was Miami who got on the scoresheet first. Brooks Urich led off the third by drawing a walk and Tyler Harris followed with an infield single to put two aboard. Following a Ross Haffey walk that loaded the bases, Landon Stephens came through with a single to left that scored both Urich and Harris. The RedHawks' next batter, Dallas Hall, got the lead to three with a sacrifice fly as Haffey was able to tag and beat the throw home. MU held a 3-0 advantage through two and a half innings of action.
Ohio's lone run came on an RBI groundout in the sixth.
The RedHawks and Bobcats conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
