MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The RedHawk baseball team concluded its three-game series at Central Michigan by dropping a 5-1 decision to the Chippewas on Sunday afternoon.
Miami starter Grant Hartwig (L, 0-4) went two innings and allowed four runs on two hits. He also walked and struck out two. Nick Ernst tossed the final six innings and gave up just one run on seven hits while striking out three. CMU's starter Pat Leatherman (W, 3-3) pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just four hits.
The Chippewas got themselves the early advantage with a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a two-run single in the bottom of the first.
An RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the fourth pushed the CMU lead to 5-0 after four innings of action.
Miami would strike for a single run in the top of the ninth when Hayden Senger hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly that scored Elvers, who had reached on a leadoff triple. However, the RedHawks were unable to mount any more of a rally as the Chippewas took the contest by a score of 5-1.
The Red & White have another busy week ahead with five games on the schedule, beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday at home against Cincinnati. On Wednesday, Miami will take a quick trip to Xavier to battle the Musketeers at 3 p.m. The team closes the week with a three-game weekend series against Eastern Michigan at home.
