OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University softball team fell behind to Bowling Green early, but a clutch hit from junior Rylee Whispel was part of a four-run bottom of the fifth inning that led the RedHawks to a 5-4, come-from-behind victory. Miami improves to 21-16 overall and 7-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons fall to 20-23 overall and 6-6 in the MAC.
Bowling Green struck for three runs in the top of the second inning off three hits and an error in the top of the second inning. After being retired in order the first two frames, the RedHawks answered back with a run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman singled home freshman Kara Leckinger to pull Miami to within two at 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the RedHawks loaded the bases on three walks with only one out. Another bases loaded walk by senior catcher Lauren Anderson forced home junior third baseman Kat Lee and forced a BGSU pitching change. Whispel came in to pinch-hit and came up big with a two RBI single to right center that scored juniors Kaitlyn Gliha and Alyssa Hedric and gave Miami its first lead at 4-3. Two batters later on a fielding error, freshman outfielder Haeley Tran came home and made it 5-3.
Senior pitcher Carly Mortensen had come into the game in the third inning and had shut the Falcons down until a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth. After a one out walk, senior pitcher Kelsey Fredericks came into the contest and pitched 2.2 perfect innings the rest of the way to secure her fourth save of the season.
The RedHawks return to action on Friday when they travel to Kent State to begin a weekend series. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
