BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- A consistent offensive attack led by freshman guard Lauren Dickerson and sophomore guard Leah Purvis led the Miami University women's basketball team to a 75-65 victory over Bowling Green in its regular season finale on Saturday. The RedHawks finish the regular season at 11-20 overall and 5-13 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons fall to 8-22 overall and 4-14 in the MAC.
With the victory Miami secures the ninth seed in next week's MAC Tournament. The Red and White will travel to eighth seed Western Michigan for a first round contest on Monday that will tip at 5:30 p.m. Check back with MiamiRedHawks.com later Saturday for more MAC Tournament information.
Dickerson led the `Hawks with 24 points on the day, helping earn the win with a 13-for-14 performance from the free throw line. Purvis was right behind her with 22 points, draining a career-high five 3-pointers. As a team, Miami shot 52.2 percent (24-for-46), including 50.0 percent (8-for-16) from behind the arc. It held the Falcons to 41.3 percent (26-for-63) shooting including only 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from three-point range.
After spotting BGSU the first six points, triples from Purvis and Dickerson got the RedHawk offense rolling. A layup by junior guard Kayla Brown tied the score at 10, while a layup from junior guard Jazz Smith gave Miami its first lead at 12-10 with 3:37 left in the first quarter. Trailing 13-12, a three-pointer from Purvis sparked a 7-0 run to close the period and give the `Hawks a 19-13 lead at the end of one.
Back-to-back trifectas from freshman guard Abbey Hoff and Purvis set the tone for the second quarter. Smith joined in the three-point assault, while both freshman forward Savannah Kluesner and junior forward Molly McDonagh put in layups. A final three-pointer by Purvis to go with a free throw finished off a 23-9 quarter for Miami as it took a 42-22 lead into the break.
Dickerson continuously drove to the basket during the third quarter forcing Bowling Green to foul her. She consistently hit her free throws, helping the RedHawks maintain their advantage. A layup by Dickerson gave Miami a 56-38 lead before the Falcons closed with a 5-2 mini run to pull within 15 at 58-43 after three periods.
Hoff, Brown and Dickerson each hit jumpers early in the fourth quarter to prevent any hope of a BGSU comeback. The Falcons hit some three-pointers late, but Dickerson closed the game by making six consecutive free throws to finish off the 75-65 win.
Brown and Hoff each scored nine for Miami. Bowling Green held a slight 32-31 rebounding edge and was led by Ashley Tunstall with 20 points.
