HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Five solid innings in relief by Bailey Martin and two home runs from Dallas Hall helped the Miami University baseball team to a 5-4 comeback victory over Northern Kentucky on Tuesday. The win improved the Red & White's record to 6-16 on the year while the Norse dropped to 8-14.
Miami starter Cole Gnetz tossed three innings of four-run ball before giving way to Martin, who went five innings strong and allowed no runs and just three hits to record the win. He also struck out a career-high seven batters. Nick Ernst came on in the ninth to close things out and earned his second save of the season. The RedHawks touched up NKU starter Brody Basilone for three runs on four hits in a five-inning stretch. The Norse's third reliever on the day, Cameron Ross, took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.
NKU grabbed an early stranglehold on the game with runs in each of the first three innings. A two-run double in the first, a one-run double in the second and a solo homer in the third had the Norse out in front, 4-0, through three frames.
Miami got back in it with a two-run blast from Ross Haffey in the top of the fourth. Brooks Urich led off the inning with a double to right center before Haffey's third round-tripper of the year cut the NKU lead in half at 4-2.
The RedHawks inched closer with a single run in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back base hits from Tyler Harris and Spencer Dull to start the inning put baserunners on the corners. MU's next batter, Landon Stephens, fouled out but it was deep enough for Harris to tag up and score, narrowing the deficit to 4-3.
Hall got the game knotted up at four apiece in the away half of the seventh with a leadoff solo shot to left field before putting the 'Hawks ahead for good in the ninth with another leadoff solo home run.
Miami gets back to work on Wednesday as they host Xavier for a 6 p.m. first pitch. Fans can watch on MiamiRedHawks.com with a subscription to CBS College Sports Live.
