OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" Miami University's women's basketball team was unable to slow down Kent State's strong interior game, falling 78-51 in the home finale Wednesday evening at Millett Hall.
Freshman guard Lauren Dickerson and sophomore forward Kendall McCoy led the RedHawks (10-20, 4-13 MAC) with 15 points apiece, with Dickerson knocking down three from beyond the arc. As a team, Miami shot 33.3 percent from the field for the contest.
The Miami offense was slow to get started in the first quarter as Kent State (18-11, 12-5 MAC) built an early advantage. Dickerson broke Deb Grushon's 37-year old Miami freshman record for most field goals in a season with her second basket of the period, establishing the new mark at 174. McCoy's jumper with nine seconds left narrowed the margin to 18-9 at quarter's end.
The RedHawks continued the momentum into the second quarter, opening with a 9-2 run that tied the game at 20 with 6:15 remaining. The Golden Flashes rebounded with 10 unanswered points that put them back in control with three minutes to go. Although McCoy's foul shooting brought the deficit back into single-digits, Kent State used a basket at the buzzer to make it 40-26 at halftime.
In the third period, the Golden Flashes controlled play in the paint and used it to build a commanding lead. With a prolonged Miami scoring drought occurring at the same time, KSU was able to extend its lead to 60-36 as the teams headed to the fourth quarter.
Kent State would go on to widen its advantage in the fourth, although Dickerson would connect on a pair of 3-pointers in the closing minutes to tighten the final score.
The RedHawks will close out the Mid-American Conference regular season on Saturday, March 4 with a road date at Bowling Green. The game will tip off at noon.
