OXFORD, Ohio -- Behind a season-high 14-point performance from sophomore forward Kendall McCoy, Miami University's women's basketball team topped the University of Akron, 54-49, Wednesday evening at Millett Hall.
Joining McCoy in double-figures were freshman guard Lauren Dickerson with 13 points and sophomore guard Leah Purvis with 11. Freshman forward Savannah Kluesner was outstanding on the boards with a career-high 15 rebounds while McCoy grabbed 10 of her own. The RedHawks (8-16, 2-9 MAC) shot 31.7 percent from the field.
Points came at a premium in the first half, with both teams struggling to score in the first quarter. Two baskets from Purvis helped give the RedHawks a 10-9 lead at the end of the opening period.
Scoring increased over the course of the second quarter with the Zips (9-13, 2-9 MAC) building an 18-14 advantage with just under two minutes to play. Miami rebounded with a 6-0 run that tied the score at 20 as both teams headed to the locker room at halftime.
The RedHawks came out hot to open the third quarter with Purvis and Dickerson both hitting 3-pointers, giving their team a 28-22 lead with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Zips brought the game to within two, but four straight points from Kluesner kept Miami in front, 35-33, at the end of the third.
As the fourth quarter began, Akron hit two from beyond the arc to narrow its deficit to 42-41 with 7:52 left. The pace slowed as both teams went into a prolonged scoring droughts as the game neared its conclusion. The remainder of the game was settled at the foul line with Purvis hitting two to put Miami up 50-46 with 18 seconds remaining. Following an Akron 3-pointer, Dickerson and McCoy sank four from the line and sealed the Miami victory.
The RedHawks head out on the road to face Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
