BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In its first win of the 2017 spring campaign, Miami University women's tennis team made program history after downing Indiana University for the first time, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. The competition also served as sophomore Abby Braddy's debut on the courts.
Previously Miami was sitting at 0-34 record in all-time competition between the two teams. The match started off slow in the doubles competition, but the RedHawks rallied to take down the Hoosiers in singles action.
In doubles, juniors Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina fell to Indiana's Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen, 6-3. Sophomore Anzhelika Shapovalova and newcomer Abby Braddy dropped their match to IU's Kim Schmider and Alicia Robinson, 6-2. The Hoosiers also defeated Miami in the no. 3 spot where Paula Gutierrez and Pauline Jahren defeated Miami's senior Andreea Badileanu and sophomore Emily Struble, 6-0.
The singles matches started off with a loss at no. 6, where Pauline Jahren defeated Miami's Braddy (6-1, 6-2). Badileanu put the RedHawks on the board with her win in the no. 3 flight, topping Natalie Whalen in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Miami pulled ahead with Struble's win over IU's Alicia Robinson, (6-4, 7-5). Vasiukhina was bested by Indiana's Kim Schmider in a close match (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
Ponormareva battled it out with Caitlin Bernard to win in the no. 1 position. The junior RedHawk took the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second set, 2-6. She came back strong in the third set to down her opponent, 6-4. Shapovalova solidified Miami's win when she topped Hoosier Paula Gutierrez in a three-set match. Miami dropped the first set, 2-6, but then rallied past her opponent to win in the next two sets (6-4, 6-1).
Miami is on the road again next weekend to face off against Georgia State on Saturday, Feb. 11, and the University of Louisville on Sunday, Feb. 12, in Louisville, Kentucky.
