SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Andrew Dusing and Chris Torpy showed they are ready for outdoor competition in a couple impressive performances at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday.
The Miami track and field program sent a small contingent of men's distance runners to the meet in their final competition before the outdoor season begins next month. Dusing went toe-to-toe with Texas' Alex Rogers in the mile run, ultimately finishing a hair behind him for the lead with his runner-up time of 4:02.90. That time is the second fastest recorded by a Mid-American Conference runner this season and narrowly missed Dan Huling's school record of 4:02.18 from 2006. Stephen Biebelhausen also put forth a strong performance with a sixth-place time of 4:06.68, a new PR for the senior.
One of Huling's indoor records did fall on the day as freshman Chris Torpy turned out an indoor school-record time of 1:52.35 to place 10th in the race. His mark ranks third among MAC runners this indoor campaign.
"It was exciting to see what our middle distance group can do indoors," Director of Track and Field Tom Chorny said. "Both Dusing and Biebelhausen ran PRs in the mile and we had a lot of guys PR in the 5K. This was a step in the right direction for our distance runners, we are at a really good starting point for the outdoor season and I'm excited to see what they can do at the end of the year."
Miami's final event it competed in was the 5000m, where it went two through four in its placings. That group was led by Jake Brumfield's runner-up time of 14:44.76, which sits eighth in the MAC. Matt Bromley and Ben Metzger battled it out for third and fourth as they were separated by a mere .17 seconds with times of 14:49.18 and 14:49.35, respectively.
This weekend concludes the indoor slate for the men as it begins its outdoor slate at the Stanford Invite on March 31. The women return to the track on Feb. 24 to begin the MAC Indoor Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich.
