RedHawks Fall to the Colonels, 4-3

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami University women's tennis team opened up its weekend at home with a match against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The RedHawks dropped the match, 4-3, after a tough tiebreaker.
Doubles started off with a loss at No. 3 where senior Andreea Badileanu and sophomore Abby Brady fell, (6-2), against their opponent Kristina Lagoda and Marina Marti of EKU. Juniors Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina redeemed the Red & White after they topped Laura Argente and Raquel Montalvo, (6-3) at No. 1. Sophomores Emily Struble and Anzhelika Shapovalova were unable to clinch the doubles point for the 'Hawks. The pair were defeated by Vikorija Demcenkova and Sagung Putri Dwinta, (6-3).
Shapovalova returned in singles action to defeat Demcenkova in straight sets (6-1, 7-5), to put Miami on the board. Newcomer Abby Brady dropped her match to Margaux Lacroix, (6-1, 6-1). Struble tied the competition when she downed her opponent, Kristina Lagoda, at No. 3 in straight sets (6-3, 7-5).
The RedHawks pulled ahead after Ponomareva's win at No. 1 in a battle of a match. Miami handily took the first set (6-2), but then fell in the second after a tie breaker (6-7 (2-7)). Ponomareva returned full-force in the third set to top her opponent (6-3). Miami ceded a point due to retiring at No. 4, evening the dual at 3-3.
The match rested on the shoulders of Vasiukhina at No. 5 who was facing off with Marina Marti. The junior RedHawk fell in the first set, (6-4), but then rallied past her opponent to take the second, (6-4). Vasiukhina was unfortunately unable to clinch the match for the 'Hawks after she dropped the third set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, (7-2).
Today's loss dropped Miami to a 1-5 record in overall play. The team's weekend isn't over yet as it will travel to take on Xavier University on Sunday in Cincinnati, Ohio at 4 p.m.
