DURHAM, N.C. - The Miami University field hockey team fell to No. 2 Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by a score of 4-2. The RedHawks finish the season with a 12-9 overall record.
"I think our presence and our game was outstanding," said head coach Inako Puzo. "We knew we were going to have to play defense for a long period of time, but we were ready for that. We were disciplined and we really have different faces, different ways to play defense during the entire game. I think that was making Duke's job more complicated. With the ball, I think we take care of our opportunities better than in the past."
Miami led the game in penalty corners 5-1. Duke led the game in shots 9-7.
Six minutes into the game Ashley Kristen scored her ninth of the season on a tap-in pass from the middle of the circle from Rose Tynan to give Duke an early lead.
Erin Scherrer made it 2-0, knocking in her eighth of the season after the initial shot was blocked. The assist came from Rose Tynan, who intercepted the ball midfield to start the play.
Rose Tynan scored her 16th of the season during the 51st minute of play on a backhanded shot, making it a 3-0 game with Duke in the lead. The assist came from Caroline Andretta.
In the 56th minute of play Lexi Silver put Miami on the board with her seventh goal of the season. The initial shot from Paula Portugal was saved by Sammi Steele, but Silver was there to collect the rebound.
Henni Otten scored her third of the season, on her birthday, off a direct penalty corner feed from Estel Roig. Otten's goal cut Duke's lead to 3-2 with only nine minutes remaining.
Caroline Andretta scored her fifth of the season off a pass from Margaux Paolino with less than three minutes to play.
Six different Miami players recorded a shot in the game.
"I think the team showed great character and personality," said Puzo. "When you are down 3-0 against No. 2, I think a lot of people would give upÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦not with Miami. We don't give up. We keep playing. We keep fighting."
