OXFORD, Ohio - After falling behind in the first half, the Miami soccer team adjusted to Western Michigan's scheme to generate a number of second half scoring opportunities, but was unable to finish at the net in a 1-0 setback on Sunday.

The RedHawks drop to 0-12-1 (0-5-1 Mid-American) on the season.

"We made an adjustment in the 25th minute to be a little more aggressive defensively," Interim Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth said. "We got a bit of a jolt in the first half and carried it into the second half. This team plays and works hard. They are good character kids. This team works and I am proud of them."

The Broncos maintained possession during stretches in the early going, firing six of the first eight shots of the afternoon. In the 18th minute, WMU used a run down the left side to center the ball to Alyssa Burke, who redirected a shot that slid just inside the far post to go up 1-0.

Miami started to put together some pressure towards the end of the half, playing a dangerous ball into the box in the 45th minute, but Western Michigan was able to clear away the loose ball to maintain the lead at the half.

After getting outshot 7-4 in the first half, the RedHawks fired the first four shots of the second and generated a number of quality opportunities by getting behind the Bronco defense out wide. Shae van Gassen had a crack in the 57th minute when she was fed in the box to the right side at a sharp angle, but her shot was smothered by Stephanie Heber.

As time wore on, the RedHawks started pressing numbers forward and a Soph Spinell cross found the foot of Chloe Knue in front of the keeper box in the 76th minute, but her attempt went over the net. Miami's best chance at an equalizer came in the 78th minute when a foul set up a free kick from 25 yards out. Emily Roberts struck the ball well and it appeared labeled for the upper 90, but Heber dove across to get just enough of the ball to deflect it off the post and keep it out, securing the result.

Western Michigan outshot Miami by a 15-10 margin while Miami had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Patricia Koutoulas made six saves on seven shots for the Red & White while Heber had a four-save shutout for the Broncos.

The RedHawks resume their three-match home stand on Friday when they host Central Michigan. Opening kick is at 4 p.m.
