DEKALB, Ill. - With time winding down in regulation, the Miami soccer team put together a spirited comeback bid, but Northern Illinois converted a chance in overtime to prevail 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies (6-5-1, 3-2 Mid-American) scored 2:09 into the overtime period after the RedHawks (0-11-1, 0-4-1 MAC) scored with under 12 minutes left in regulation to tie it up.
"We were well prepared for the game," Interim Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth said. "It was unfortunate we gave up the corner kick goal, but it's our job to stop those. I challenged the team to play the best second half of their lives and they rallied to play well. I was pleased with our back four and our defensive shape, but we need to get some breaks to go our way in the attacking third."
The Huskies fired eight shots to the RedHawks' three in the opening 45 minutes of play while also enjoying a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. It was one of those set pieces that connected for NIU in the 40th minute as a Lauren Gierman service found the head of Haley Hoppe to give it a 1-0 lead at the break.
Miami battled back in the second half as possession was much more back and forth than in the opening frame. Both teams attempted six shots, though most were blocked by the defense or wide of the target.
Despite the improved play offensively, the Red & White remained behind in the latter stages of regulation. A foul near midfield changed that as Jenny Barr played a good ball into the box that was punched straight into the air by Amy Annala, where Madison Knock met the rebound on its landing and nudged the ball in for her first collegiate goal, evening the score at 1-1 in the 79th minute of play.
Energized from the equalizer, Miami pressed things offensively, firing two more shots and gaining a corner kick in the waning minutes of regulation, but no further tallies were recorded as MU moved on into overtime for the second-straight contest.
Despite the spirited comeback by the RedHawks, the Huskies struck 2:09 into the overtime when a loose ball was headed in Allie Ingham to end the contest.
The Huskies finished with a 15-9 shot advantage and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks for the afternoon. Only four of the combined 24 shot attempts were on target as Patricia Koutoulas made one stop for Miami while Annala was scored on the one shot she faced.
Miami returns home for three straight conference matches, beginning against Western Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
