OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" For their performances last week, senior golfer Patrick Flavin and junior field hockey midfielder/forward Paula Portugal are Miami Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 16-22.
Flavin continued his unprecedented run with his fourth tournament victory in five attempts at the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate. He finished at one-under par for the event, tying with Beau Breault of Eastern Michigan. Flavin then defeated Breault in a playoff on the second playoff hole by making a birdie at 18. With eight career victories, Flavin is now the all-time leader in individual wins at Miami.
This is the fourth time this season and 11th time in his career that Flavin has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. It is the second consecutive week he has earned this honor.
Portugal was instrumental in Miami's victories against Davidson and Central Michigan last week. Against Davidson, Portugal scored two goals in a 4-1 victory for the RedHawks. On Friday against Central Michigan, Portugal netted three goals in a 4-0 win, reaching 100 career points. The win against Central Michigan secures a MAC Championship and the top seed in the MAC tournament for the RedHawks. Portugal currently leads the team in goals (14), points (34), shots (70) and game-winning goals (5). Portugal is also the current scoring leader for the conference.
This is the second time this season and fourth time in her career that Portugal has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Sept. 11-17.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, Oct. 30.
