OXFORD, Ohio - After spotting Eastern Michigan an early 2-0 lead, the Miami soccer team clawed away and Katie Alexander's blast in the 107th minute capped a 3-2 comeback win in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.
Alexander's second goal of the season gave the RedHawks (2-12-1, 2-5-1 Mid-American) their second-straight overtime triumph.
"To go down 2-0 like we did was uncharacteristic," Interim Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth said. "I challenged the team to play their best half in the second and they responded."
Offense got started quickly as the Eagles (5-11-1, 2-6 MAC) struck twice in the first 18 minutes. Parys Kerr helped the Eagles draw first blood when she one touched a Kristin Nason pass that went across the goal mouth for a tap in to make it 1-0 in the eighth minute. It became a 2-0 contest at the 17:58 mark when Peyton Davis was fed into the middle of the box and beat Patricia Koutoulas from in close.
The RedHawks responded with a goal 1:12 later as Soph Spinell served a cross on the money to Kat Zalar, who redirected one off her head and in for her first goal of the year to cut the gap to 2-1. Play was wide open in the half as both teams fired eight shots for the period with the Eagles maintaining the two-goal bulge at the break.
Trailing by a goal and playing with a strong wind at their back, the RedHawks put together several strong scoring opportunities. A close range free kick by Amy Malone was punched aside by Kaylin Williams in the 56th minute and a subsequent corner kick nearly paid off with the ball crossing the line, but a foul was whistled on Miami and the goal did not count.
Another corner kick struck gold for the Red & White in the 64th minute as Spinell served a perfect cross right to the head of Lydia Brosnahan, who banged home her second goal in as many contests to even it up at 2-2.
Miami put together several scoring opportunities late. In the 87th minute, Koutoulas was tabbed to fire a free kick from midfield and with the powerful wind at her back she blasted a shot into the jet stream that appeared labeled for the upper 90 that Williams had to punch off the post. Despite the Miami pressure, the contest wore on into overtime.
While Eastern Michigan held a 2-1 shot advantage in the first overtime session, Miami did control the play on the ground for the most part. Koutoulas did finish up with another save as the contest wore on into a second overtime.
With time winding down, a loose ball kicked off of Tara Walenczyk and into the middle, where Alexander blasted a shot that caught the upper 90 with 3:53 remaining to give the RedHawks their second-straight overtime triumph.
The RedHawks ended up with a 20-16 shot advantage, though the Eagles took eight corner kicks while allowing just five. Koutoulas made six saves for Miami while Williams countered with seven for Eastern Michigan.
Miami has a short turnaround to prepare for a couple road tilts as it heads to Akron on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. kick.
