OXFORD, Ohio - On a day with several celebrations coming during the pregame, the Miami soccer team got down to business and posted its first shutout of the season in a 0-0 draw against rival Ohio on Sunday.
The RedHawks (0-10-1, 0-3-1 Mid-American) got six stops out of Patricia Koutoulas as they picked up a point in the MAC standings against the Bobcats (5-6-1, 2-1-1 MAC). Prior to the contest, Miami held its Senior Day ceremony to recognize the contributions of Katie Alexander, Jenny Barr, Madison Knock, Chloe Knue, Amy Malone, Jenn Rowe, Shae van Gassen and Kat Zalar. The pregame festivities also saw retired head coach Bobby Kramig embraced by all of his alumni that he impacted over the course of his 34 years with Miami soccer.
Miami got off to a strong start possession wise, with Olivia Winnett tallying the team's first four shots of the afternoon from long range, forcing Erin Beurket into a pair of early stops in that sequence. While offensive opportunities became more limited as the half wore on, the RedHawks stayed in their shape well and kept the Bobcats from mounting much of an attack. Ultimately, the first half shots were 6-1 in favor of the Red & White even though the contest remained scoreless at the break.
Shot attempts became more commonplace in the second half of regulation, with Ohio owning a 9-7 advantage on that front and forcing Koutoulas to make four saves of her own after not seeing a single shot on goal in the first half. The junior keeper remained sharp, making a point blank save in the 77th minute on an Alivia Milesky chance from 10 yards out. OU put together a threat at the end of regulation, creating consecutive corner kicks and forcing one more leaping stop by Koutoulas off a Remi Eades header as time expired.
A big bounce nearly benefited the Red & White in the first overtime period as a Bobcat foul at midfield allowed them to push numbers forward as they elected Koutoulas to attempt the free kick. Her service went untouched into the 18-yard box and took a high hop that forced Beurket to leap to corral before it could cross the line in the 95th minute. Beurket went down over the goal line amidst some contact, which was deemed excessive as the foul was whistled on Miami to negate a potential winner. The second overtime period saw more conservative play as both teams battled to protect a point in the conference standings.
The RedHawks outshot the Bobcats 16-13 while Ohio had a 7-5 lead in corner kicks. Koutoulas' six stops were good for her second career solo shutout while Beurket's two saves contributed to a clean sheet at the other end. Winnett led all players with six shot attempts.
Miami has a short week to get ready for its next round of MAC contests, starting with a Thursday night tilt at Northern Illinois before returning home against Western Michigan on Sunday. Thursday's contest kicks off at 7 p.m. ET.
