TOLEDO, Ohio - The RedHawk women's basketball team battled hard but a late surge by Toledo was too much to overcome as Miami fell to the Rockets, 64-50, on Saturday afternoon at Savage Arena. The Red & White drop to 6-10 (0-3 MAC) on the year while UT improved to 11-3 (2-1 MAC).
Lauren Dickerson rebounded from a tough opening couple of games of MAC play to score a team-high 17 points for MU. She also tied a career-high by dishing out eight assists. Kendall McCoy, who earned her first start since Nov. 26, contributed a season-high 11 points.
Toledo opened on a 6-2 run but a McCoy three-pointer got Miami right back in it with 6:55 to play in the first quarter. The Rockets responded by scoring seven of the next nine points before another RedHawk triple, this time by Kristen Levering, had the score at 13-10 with just over a minute and a half remaining in the opening frame. The Rockets ended the quarter with a free throw and a layup to give them a 16-10 advantage through 10 minutes of play.
The RedHawks started the second with two quick layups from Megan Galloway and McCoy but UT answered with a triple and a layup of their own, giving them a 21-14 edge going into the media timeout. Miami came out firing after the timeout by scoring eight straight points, courtesy of two three-pointers from Jazz Smith and another lay-in by Galloway. A Rocket basket with 2:12 left in the half ended the run but Lauren Dickerson capped off the frame by sinking two free throws. The Red & White held a 25-23 lead through 20 minutes of play.
Miami kicked off the second half with a 6-2 run via two baskets from McCoy and a jumper from Dickerson, forcing Toledo to take a timeout just 1:15 in. Over the next seven minutes, the Rockets went on a 11-2 run to take a 36-33 lead with 1:41 remaining in the third. Savannah Kluesner closed the frame with a layup and Miami trailed by one at 36-35 through 30 minutes.
After a tightly-contested third quarter, the two teams opened the fourth by trading buckets. Miami got early baskets from Kluesner and Dickerson but the Rockets were able to convert on a few more opportunities. UT took a 48-41 lead into a timeout with 5:30 remaining. Leah Purvis hit a three-pointer out of the timeout but Toledo responded with a a quick 10-6 run before a Dickerson jumper with 1:39 left took the two teams into another timeout with the Rockets ahead, 58-50. Six straight free throws sealed the game for UT.
Miami gets back in action on Wednesday when they host Eastern Michigan. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
