OMAHA, Neb. - The Miami hockey team put 30 shots on goal, but Omaha won the special teams battle to post a 2-0 win on Saturday evening.
Saturday's result gives Omaha (14-8-4, 7-6-1-0 National Collegiate Hockey) four of six points on the weekend while Miami (8-10-6, 4-6-4-2 NCHC) is now winless in three.
The pace of play was quick between two quick skating teams as the first four minutes were played without a whistle as Miami fired a pair of shots that Evan Weninger turned aside. The Red and White fired seven of the first 10 shots on goal, but Weninger was sharp in keeping it scoreless. One of the better shifts occurred with Zach LaValle getting a pair of heavy shots from in close, but one was stopped and another attempt was blocked.
Omaha got the evening's first opportunity on the power play late in the frame and Miami spent most of the short-handed situation in good position clearing pucks away. However, a blocked shot ended up on Steven Spinner's stick and he worked a backdoor feed for Fredrik Olofsson for a goal in the waning seconds of the power play to make it 1-0 with just 1:44 to go in the opening frame. That goal was the only one on the board after 20 minutes despite Miami's 11-5 shot advantage.
An early penalty to Miami in the second gave Omaha another power play opportunity. This time, MU was able to kill off the man advantage and stay within a goal with plenty of time left in the middle stanza. The Red and White then went to work in the offensive end, eventually drawing a penalty six and a half minutes into the period. Miami was unable to click on that man advantage as it continued to trail midway through the contest.
The Red and White had another power play later on in the frame that did more harm than good as a giveaway sprung Steven Spinner for a shorthanded breakaway goal. That power play was cut short by a Miami penalty with 32 seconds left in the man advantage, though MU did kill off the ensuing UNO power play.
Miami tried to make a push at the end of the frame with Anthony Louis skating past the defense and in close for a tight breakaway, but Weninger got a pad on that attempt to keep it a 2-0 game at the end of two periods.
Down by two, Miami tried to blaze the comeback trail and had a couple of power plays, including a 6-on-4 with a minute and a half left with Ryan Larkin pulled for an extra attacker. Ultimately, MU was unable to crack Weninger in suffering the series defeat.
Miami ended up outshooting Omaha 30-22, but went 0-for-4 on the power play while Omaha went 1-for-4 on the man advantage while adding a shorthanded goal. Larkin stopped 20 of 22 shots while Weninger stopped all 30 shots he saw.
The Red and White return home for a weekend series against league rival Western Michigan. Friday night's series opener is nationally televised on CBS Sports Network and has an earlier than normal 7:05 p.m. start.
