Jan. 17, 2017 Miami University announced that Coleman Barnes has been elevated to Executive Associate Athletic Director/Senior Director of Development. Barnes served as Senior Director of Development and Associate Athletics Director for the past four years for the RedHawks.
"The accomplishments that we have been able to make with the Graduating Champions Campaign is a testament to the leadership of Miami's University Advancement Division and the Athletic Department," said Barnes. "I am humbled to be able to represent this outstanding university and thankful to Tom Herbert, Brad Bundy, David Sayler, and Jude Killy for this opportunity. They have allowed me to build a team of talented development officers who are consistently looking for difference makers to invest in the student-athlete experience. We will continue to work tirelessly to successfully complete the Graduating Champions Campaign in an effort to better position our student-athletes for success in the classroom, in competition, and in life after graduating from Miami."
Since arriving in Oxford, Barnes has served as a co-manager for the Graduating Champions Campaign, raising more than $60 million for the $80 million goal, including $28.3 million in gifts and pledges in 2015.
Barnes has also boosted Miami's Red and White Club membership to over 2,000 members, a 27-percent increase since his arrival in 2013 and has increased revenue by 24 percent, up to $880,000 per year.
Prior to Miami, Barnes spent two seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), as the Associate Athletics Director for Development. Barnes oversaw Blazer Boosters, the fundraising unit for UAB Athletics, increasing the annual fund membership by 54 percent through a 16-month initiative.
"Coleman has led the Intercollegiate Athletics development program through a period of unprecedented growth and record levels of private support," said Brad Bundy, senior associate vice president, Universtiy Advancement. "This promotion is well deserved and well earned."
Prior to UAB, Barnes served as the Executive Director of The Bulldog Foundation and Associate Athletics Director for Development for Fresno State (2008-2011). As an executive administrator, Barnes oversaw all components of the development office that raised approximately $6 million annually. He also managed a development team that successfully secured funding for a $6 million sports medicine center and a $1.2 million turf project.
"Under Coleman's direction of our athletic development team, we have experienced record-setting growth and success," said Miami Deputy Athletic Director Jude Killy. "He and his staff truly are generating resources to continue and enhance our tradition of Graduating Champions. We appreciate Coleman's commitment to Miami and are lucky to have him and his family as part of Miami and the Oxford community."
From 2005-2008, Barnes served as the Assistant Director for the UMAA Foundation, the fundraising unit for Ole Miss Athletics, playing an integral role in raising nearly $13 million annually. Prior to Ole Miss, Barnes was a Development Associate for the Hurricane Club at the University of Miami (2004-2005) and an intern in the Harvard University Athletics Ticket Office (2003-2004).
Barnes graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Kentucky in 2002 with a major in kinesiology and a minor in business. He was also a three-year letterwinner as the long snapper on the football team. In 2004, Barnes earned a Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in sport management from the Kentucky. Barnes anticipates completing his Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Mississippi this spring.
