COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Miami University field hockey team had a strong performance against Ohio State, but an overtime goal gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 win in Columbus on Sunday. The RedHawks fall to 3-4 on the season, while Ohio State improves to 3-3.
Miami had several good chances in a scoreless first half in which it outshot the Buckeyes, 8-5. After defending a pair of OSU penalty corners early, the Red and White earned back-to-back corners of their own. Each time junior back Mariona Heras got a shot attempt off, but the shots were blocked by Buckeye defenders. Sophomore midfielder Paula Portugal had two shots late, but they went just wide.
The RedHawks got on the board first during the second half in the 45th minute. Portugal dribbled the ball into the circle and took a reverse shot from six yards out that beat the Ohio State goalkeeper. It was her fourth goal of the weekend and her 10th goal of the season.
It remained that way until the 51st minute, when Maddy Humphrey got in front of the cage and was able to tip a shot in to tie the score at one. That ended a scoreless streak of 143:14 over the past three games by senior goalkeeper Alysa Xavier and the Miami defense.
The RedHawks kept the pressure up by earning seven penalty corners in the final 10 minutes. Portgual hit the crossbar with a shot in the final minute of regulation. Miami was awarded two penalty corners after time expired, but was unable to get the game-winning goal.
In overtime, Heras had a shot a little over a minute in that was kicked away by the Buckeye goalkeeper. OSU went down the field and in the 74th minute Adelaide Penzone tapped one in to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 victory.
For the game the RedHawks held a 17-9 advantage in shots and an 11-7 lead in penalty corners. Heras finished with seven shots for Miami, while Portugal took six.
The RedHawks return to action next Sunday with another big challenge as they host second ranked Duke at 1 p.m.
