CLEVELAND, Ohio - Seniors Jacob Prodoehl (men's swimming and diving) and Kathie Wollney (women's track and field) were both awarded with the Mid-American Conference's Medal of Excellence on Wednesday evening.
The Medal of Excellence is an award presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each of the 12 Conference member institutions.
"The Medal of Excellence Award is a reinforcement of the core values that we as a conference and each of our member institutions all possess with excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and service," said MAC Commissioner, Jon A. Steinbrecher. "We congratulate all of our Medal of Excellence Award winners."
Prodoehl earned First-Team All-MAC honors after breaking school records in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke at the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The senior posted top-five finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (fifth), 100-yard backstroke (third) and 200-yard backstroke (fifth) while also putting up points on the Red and White's 400-yard medley and freestyle relays. Prodoehl graduated with a degree in biology while minoring in neuroscience and finished his undergraduate with a 3.87 grade-point average.
Wollney had a breakout season on the track, earning Second-Team All-MAC honors as a member of Miami's runner-up distance medley relay team at the MAC Indoor Championships. Outdoors, she qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet, where she placed 26th with a time of 58.99 in the 400m hurdles, the second-fastest time in school history. Additionally, she was named Academic All-MAC during both the indoor and outdoor seasons and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health with a stellar 3.75 grade-point average.
To be honored with the Medal of Excellence Award, student-athletes had to participate on the varsity level in a conference sponsored sport and shown evidence of academic success with a minimum 3.50 accumulative grade-point average, exhibited athletics excellence, leadership and service. Selection of the recipients was made by each MAC institution.
