AKRON, Ohio -- For the first time since 2012, the Miami University softball team is the Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions after defeating Ohio, 3-0, in the MAC Championship game. The RedHawks improve to 34-21 overall and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats finish the season at 37-23.
Senior Amber Logemann threw the final 3.1 innings of shutout ball to earn the victory. She was named MAC Tournament MVP after finishing 4-0 at the event, allowing only three runs in 32.1 innings pitched for a 0.65 ERA. She struck out 34.
Logemann was joined on the All-Tournament Team by freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman. For the tournament she hit .462 (6-for-13) with a big home run in the championship game. She drew five walks and had an on-base percentage of .611.
Miami got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Schlattman led off with a walk. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl then hit a line shot to centerfield that allowed Schlattman to score and give the Red and White a 1-0 lead.
Junior pitcher Carly Mortensen kept Ohio off the board for the first 3.2 innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four. After the Bobcats got two runners on in the top of the fourth, Logemann came in and forced a fly ball to right field. Senior outfielder Hailey Reed made a diving catch on the ball saving two runs and preserving the shutout.
The RedHawks got two important insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Schlattman led off with a solo shot over the leftfield fence. It was her 11th home run of the season, which ties the single-season Miami record set by Bre Robinson back in 2008. Freshman Hannah Girlie came up to pinch-hit and sent a single to leftfield. The ball got past the Ohio leftfielder, allowing Girlie to advance to third. Junior second baseman Eryn McCarver was then reentered to run. Senior outfielder Taylor Shuey fouled out to right field, allowing McCarver to come home and make it 3-0.
Ohio got a hit in each of the final two innings, but Logemann recorded five strikeouts to help secure the win.
Schlattman finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Logemann improved her record to 23-12, allowing only two hits while striking out six.
Miami will learn its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday when the selection show airs on Sunday at 10 p.m. on ESPNU.
