TOLEDO, Ohio - Three competitors scored as the Miami track and field program began its slate at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday.
Through three completed events, the RedHawk women are tied with Eastern Michigan for fifth place with 10 points in the team standings. That total trails Kent State (31), Akron (27), Ohio (16) and Central Michigan (10). MU's men are scoreless, though only two events have been completed on that side.
Thursday's competition got underway in the throwing circle, with Martha Szekely unleashing a toss of 178-3 on her fourth trip to the cage and placing seventh in the hammer throw in the process. On the javelin runway, Aaryn Gray and Danielle Collier combined to give Miami eight points in the team standings. Gray's third heave landed 140-9, which was good for fourth place and a new personal best that moves her to third place on the school's all-time top-10 list. Collier stuck her first throw of the day at 138-2 to take sixth.
The Miami men were one spot away from securing a point in the men's hammer throw as Zubin Coleman took seventh in the event. Coleman's first throw of his sequence marked 179-8.5, which matched his personal best that he set at the RedHawk Invitational.
Day one of the championship meet was supposed to wrap up with the women's and men's 10,000m run. However, lightning was spotted in the area six laps into the women's race, forcing the meet to come to a halt for the evening.
The rescheduled 10,000m will now open day two of the competition on Friday, beginning with the women's race, at 8:30 a.m.
