KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- It was a pitching duel between seniors Amber Logemann and Allyson Kus, but Western Michigan came away with a 3-1 victory over the Miami University softball team on Saturday. The RedHawks fall to 22-14 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos improve to 15-17 overall and 6-3 in the MAC.
Due to poor weather expected the remainder of the weekend, this will be the only game of the series that will be played. The remaining two games have been canceled and will not be made up.
Western Michigan used a walk, a groundout and an error to score a run in the bottom of the first. The Broncos made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
It remained that way until the RedHawks finally broke through on Kus with a run in the top of the fifth. With one out, junior designated player Lauren Anderson singled to rightfield and was replaced by a pinch-runner, senior Tanya Busby. A single from sophomore third baseman Kat Lee moved Busby to third. After the second out was recorded, a grounder from junior outfielder Jenna Jones was booted by the Broncos' third baseman, allowing Busby to come home and score.
WMU added one more solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.
Anderson finished the game 2-for-3. Logemann took the hard-luck loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Miami returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bowling Green for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
