OXFORD, Ohio - A solid, all-around team effort helped the Miami University baseball team spring past Bowling Green, 5-1, Saturday at McKie Field. The victory moved the Red & White's record to 13-15 on the year, including a 4-3 mark Mid-American Conference action.
Miami grabbed an early lead, scoring in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Chad Sedio drew a walk and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. The error proved to be costly as Dallas Hall singled in Sedio to give Miami a 1-0 lead.
The Red & White doubled their lead in the top of the fourth when Gary Russo led off the frame by cranking his tenth home run of the season off of the scoreboard. After four, MU had a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, with one down, Russo ripped a triple to right field and was brought home the next at bat on a sac fly by Adam Yacek. Through six innings of play, the RedHawks held a 3-0 edge.
Miami struck for a single run again in the bottom of the seventh. Hayden Senger hit a two out double to right to give the 'Hawks a baserunner. After a lineout, Steve Sada doubled to right, plating Senger and pushing the lead to 4-0 after seven frames.
The Falcons finally broke through in the top half of the eighth, scoring one run on a groundout to second. The Red & White responded in the home half and regained their four run lead at 5-1 when Dallas Hall laid down a sac bunt to score Yacek from third, who had reached previously on a walk.
Miami starting pitcher Gus Graham (W, 2-2) had a solid outing, tossing 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed just four hits while striking out six. Also appearing on the mound for the 'Hawks Saturday was Nick Ernst, who threw one inning and allowed one run on one hit. He also struck out one. Ryan Marske came on in relief with two outs in the top of the eighth and tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn his fourth save of 2016.
The 'Hawks and Falcons get back at it with a doubleheader on Sunday that will now begin at noon.
