Golf Finishes Third at MAC Championship

SYLVANIA, Ohio - The Miami University golf team finished third at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday. The RedHawks tied for the best round of the day, shooting a fourth round score of four-over par 288 to finish at 40-over par for the tournament. Kent State won the MAC title at 16-over par, while Eastern Michigan was second at 36-over par.
"Obviously this wasn't the outcome we wanted at all," said head coach Zac Zedrick. "The 36-hole day put us in an incredibly deep hole where there was no margin for error going into the last two rounds. We got off to a great start yesterday, but the start of our back nine stopped our momentum.
"I think we played well today in difficult conditions. Our guys just have too much pride and are going to do whatever they can to finish as high as they can. I think it showed some grit and how much they respect the opportunity to compete."
At the conclusion of the tournament, the 2016 MAC Men's Golf awards were announced. Sophomore Patrick Flavin was named a member of the All-MAC First Team. Redshirt freshman Brian Ohr was named to the All-Tournament Team.
"I was really proud of Brian this week, it was a culmination of him continuing to get a little better throughout the season," commented Zedrick. "This is just the beginning for him for sure.
"Pat has had a really good season and I was disappointed for him that he wasn't named Golfer of the Year. He was definitely deserving, but you have to tip your hat to Chase Johnson of Kent State for the year the year he had. It could have gone either way, but I'm proud for Pat for all he's done for us this year."
It was a solid, consistent day for Miami as all five of its golfers shot a one-over par 72 on the day. It allowed Ohr to earn his first career top-10 finish as he tied for fifth at four-over par.
Flavin just missed a top-10 finish, tying for 11th at nine-over par. Senior Jack Sparling tied for 18th in his final tournament at 15-over par. Junior Greg Conrad tied for 23rd at 19-over par, while senior Daniel Schwarz was tied for 31st at 21-over par.
"The result hurts because I think this team really did build off of last season's success at the end of the year," said Zedrick. "We came in knowing that if we took care of business it would be more than good enough. The time was put in and we were ready to go, but at the end of the day we just didn't play close to our capabilities the week we wanted the most."
Flavin will now see if he receives an at-large bid as an individual to the NCAA Regionals. The selection show is Thursday at 9:30 a.m. on the Golf Channel.
