AKRON, Ohio -- The Miami University softball team came from behind in the sixth inning to tie its series opener against Akron on Friday, but ultimately dropped a 3-2 decision. The RedHawks fall to 26-20 overall and 11-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips improve to 27-20-1 overall and 9-7-1 in the MAC.
Freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off the top of the first with a single up the middle. It would be the only base runner that Miami managed until it made its comeback attempt in the sixth. The Zips got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third off RedHawk senior pitcher Amber Logemann. A solo home run broke up the scoreless game. A pair of doubles brought home a second run to make it 2-0.
It remained that way until the top of the sixth. With two outs, Schlattman drew a walk. A wild pitch moved her to second. Freshman second baseman Hannah Girlie beat out an infield single to put runners at the corners. Akron chose to walk senior outfielder Taylor Shuey to load the bases. Freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl came through with a single up the middle to score Schlattman and Girlie and tie the score at two.
In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff double and two hit batters loaded the bases with one out. A bloop single by Kelly Hysong landed in leftfield and scored what turned out to be the winning run in Akron's 3-2 victory.
Wahl finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Schlattman and Girlie were each 1-for-2 with one run scored. Logemann allowed three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched. She struck out nine.
Miami completes its series with the Zips on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
